Artist Statement

In May of 2001 I decided I wanted to try painting. It was the last few months of my one year sabbatical in France. What can I say; I was living in Paris next to the Eiffel Tower.

As I was instructed in the How to Paint book that I borrowed from the library, I bought a No. 8 brush and tubes of red, blue, yellow and white poster paint. Since I had no idea whether or not I would actually like painting, my first canvasses were made of regular pieces of paper (rescued from the recycling bin) taped together to give me enough space to experiment. I continue to use this very sophisticated system for my paintings with the addition of more colors of poster paint and more brushes.

For me, painting is my medium to personal expression in away that is very different from my training as a scientist and amateur classical musician/vocalist. Both science and music have prescribed structures in the form of a piece of music or an experiment. However, with my paintings I simply paint whatever forms in whatever colors that inspire me at that moment. The continual surprise is that I end up with something beautiful, vibrant and fun (at least I think so) which is the way I try to live my life.
